NEW YORK, NEW YORK!
Early on Saturday 9th of February a group of
6 members of Solihull Widney Senior Section flew off from Birmingham to
New York for a few days.
All of us were very excited and full of expectations which were met by
New York's atmosphere. On Saturday afternoon after a long and tiresome
flight we began our five night stay in the Big Apple.
We started our stay with a highly recommended tour, in which we visited
the main attractions that New York has to offer including the remains
of the World Trade Centre, the Rockefeller Centre and sights of Tiffanys
and Macys department store.
Following the tour we went for a mooch around the many shops around Times
Square buying a few souvenirs on the way.
On Monday, we headed to the Rockefeller Centre to have a look over the
magnificent views of New York including Central Park and the Empire State
Building. We thoroughly enjoyed this because we could see what was where
and the scale of the attractions. After this breathtaking experience we
took the subway to visit New York's vast shopping facilities including
the humungous Macy's store.
The following morning we went for a trip to see the famous Statue of Liberty
and do a historical tour around Ellis Island. We took a ferry across to
the Statue and from the ferry Liberty looked small but when we were on
the island we could see how big it was. We walked up 156 stairs to reach
the Lady's feet. The views, like those of Rockefeller, were stunning.
We listened to a fascinating audio tour about the history of the Statue
and how it has been changed and thought of over the years. During this
the snow began to fall! All of us became very excited and made snow angels
in some of the untouched white stuff.
We then split into two groups of three. Half of us went to the Bodies
Exhibition which proved to be very interesting and gave an insight into
the human body. There were opportunities to see the real size of body
parts and learn how important it is for it all to work together.
The other three went to Central Park for a play in the snow. The pathways,
rocks and lampposts looked like Narnia and the sight was almost magical.
Here again we made snow angels and took some very amusing videos of Katie
and Emily Rose in the snow.
The final day began with yet more shopping. We bought our theatre tickets
for the matinee performance "Sunday in the Park with George".
This performance, unheard of by all was thoroughly enjoyed. The day was
topped off by a visit to the Hard Rock Café where we enjoyed looking
at the memorabilia and eating some yummy food.
Unfortunately our trip was coming to an end and on our final morning we
finished with a horse and carriage ride round Central Park. This was the
perfect end to an amazing few days.
